Council approves five-year IdeaTek Telecom agreement to replace city phone system
Summary
The Lansing City Council approved a five-year service agreement with IdeaTek Telecom LLC at $1,153 per month to replace the city—s ageing Mitel phone system, citing end-of-life support concerns.
The Lansing City Council voted to approve a five-year telecommunications service agreement with IdeaTek Telecom LLC to modernize the city—s phone system.
City staff told the council the city currently uses a Mitel phone system that is reaching end of life and that manufacturer support will end later this year. Staff said they solicited multiple quotes and that IdeaTek offered the lowest monthly price at $1,153 per month, with the first month free and installation fees waived; staff recommended approving the agreement. "The system is at end of life," a staff member said, adding that Mitel—s service support would end in September or October.
Staff also said the proposal would support up to 75 users; the city—s current pool is about 71 users, and staff said recent additions of lines accelerated the city—s need to replace the system sooner than planned. Council members asked whether other quotes had been sought; staff confirmed multiple quotes were received and that IdeaTek—s pricing was most competitive.
By roll call, the council approved the service agreement and authorized the mayor to execute the contract and any related documents. Staff estimated the full five-year term would be worth about $69,180.
The agreement is intended to address immediate capacity and support needs so the city can restore reliable telephone service and add departments such as the fire department to the system without reassigning numbers.
