Blacksburg Town Council approved a lease of office space in the annex of the Thomas Connor House at 104 Draper Road to Live Work Eat Grow (LWEC) under Ordinance 20 88. Town staff explained that Virginia Tech ended its lease of the building on Dec. 31, 2024, Housing and Community Connections staff now occupy the main house, and one of the three annex offices is proposed to be leased to LWEC to support its community‑garden operations on town property.
Matt Hanratty (staff) said the annex contains three offices and the town does not currently need the extra capacity for staff; leasing an office to LWEC would put the space back into active use and provide storage/administrative support for the community‑garden program. Council members who toured the Thomas Connor House praised the space and expressed support for LWEC as a tenant.
Council moved and approved the ordinance on a recorded roll call; staff noted the town will forgo the Virginia Tech lease revenue (the prior lease was described in the meeting as roughly $80,000 per year) now that the space is in town use and partially leased to LWEC.
