The primary substantive change modifies language about off-campus conduct: staff replaced a longer, prescriptive paragraph with wording that directs staff to follow district policy and state statute while preserving flexibility for nonpunitive responses such as mental-health supports, behavior contracts or other interventions when appropriate. The intent, staff said, is to avoid "boxing in" the district to punitive consequences when other responses may better address student needs.
A second change adds practical guidance for families on medication administration at school: the code now includes directions and references to the specific forms parents must file to allow prescription and non-prescription medication to be administered during the school day.
Legal staff said they circulated the draft to stakeholders and incorporated feedback; the board will receive the final document for action at the July 22 meeting.
