Board Receives Workers' Compensation Renewal Update; Experience Mod Improves

Director Hennekens presented the annual workers' compensation renewal and historical claims data. Hennekens said the district's three-year experience-modification rate was 0.77 in the current year (improved from prior years) and that the district has trended down in claims and expenses since earlier years. The presentation showed premiums over time and explained that a modest 3.4% increase in the coming renewal is driven by payroll growth offsetting the improved experience modification.
Hennekens said slips, trips and falls as well as injuries in certain programs (special education, some classroom settings) are common drivers of larger claims for many districts; the district has focused safety and winter-season mitigation (sand/salt) efforts to reduce incidents. Board members asked about high-risk areas and were told winter conditions and certain student-staff interactions are the primary drivers; Hennekens said continued attention to prevention has reduced the mod and premium compared with a decade ago.
The item was informational; the board will see the renewal for approval on the June 24 consent agenda as required before the July 1 effective date.
