City accepts $1.2M MSD grant to fund permeable pavers, bioswales on West Lisbon Avenue reconstruction

The Department of Public Works told the Public Works Committee on Feb. 20 that the West Lisbon Avenue reconstruction will include green‑infrastructure elements paid in part by a $1.2 million Green Solutions grant from the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District.
Tony Jacek, DPW Stormwater, said the reconstruction extends more than two miles and will include roughly 1.5 miles of permeable pavement in parking lanes, ten bioswales and two grass swales in terrace areas. The landscaping and permeable surfaces are intended to treat stormwater on site and reduce runoff to the sewer system.
Jacek said bioswales will generally be placed in terrace areas near intersections and that DPW will conduct outreach to abutting property owners because some measures — such as grass swales — can change access patterns. "We could probably reach out to those property affected property owners," he said when asked about outreach plans.
The committee recommended acceptance of the grant and directed DPW to proceed with the reconstruction plans that incorporate the green‑infrastructure elements.
