Board approves updated employee conflict-of-interest policy

On Feb. 18 the Las Cruces Public Schools Board approved policy GBEA, updating the district''s employee conflict-of-interest policy to reference state standards and to clarify processes for evaluating potential conflicts when staff or the district could have a financial interest in a transaction.
Staff presented revised language requested in prior readings. The revised draft states that employees must comply with the New Mexico Governmental Conduct Act and adds a procedure in which the district''s central purchasing office helps determine whether an employee''s financial interest is outweighed by the public benefit and, where necessary, whether official action should be recommended. The changes also converted some grammatical phrasing to direct verb forms to improve readability.
Member Frank moved adoption on third reading; Member Tonorio seconded. Secretary Wofford performed the roll-call vote; the policy passed 5-0. Board members said staff would return the clean, signed copy for the record.
