Las Cruces board adopts three-year instructional calendar (option B) after narrow votes

The Las Cruces Public Schools Board voted Feb. 18 to adopt “Draft B” as the district instructional calendar for school years 2025-26 through 2027-28.
Dr. Wendy Miller Tomlinson, director of teaching and learning, presented three calendar drafts developed by the calendar committee and refined through stakeholder feedback; 5,000 respondents participated in an online survey. The committee and many student leaders had expressed a preference for Draft B because it balances longer summer breaks with two week-long breaks in the fall and spring and aligns better with extracurricular scheduling.
After debate, the board first considered Draft A and voted it down on a 3-2 roll call. Board members cited continuity and student-family needs during the discussion before voting. The board then approved Draft B by roll call, 4-1. Secretary Wofford and Members Tonorio and Frank recorded their votes during the roll-call process; Vice President Nolan said he was voting for B "even though I think we are making a mistake," and President Court voted in favor of B.
The adopted calendar includes two educator planning days that are remote for students, a two-day graduation schedule and transition days for entering kindergarten and ninth-grade students. Dr. Miller Tomlinson said the district will publish a final calendar and notify families of key dates.
Ending: The board's approval locks in the district schedule for the next three years; staff said they will return with operational details and outreach plans to help families and extracurricular programs adjust to the schedule.
