The West Chester Area School District’s policy review committee approved a new administrative guideline, AG 235.1, that requires parental permission for student-conducted research involving other students.
The guideline is intended to clarify oversight for research projects conducted in classes such as AP Capstone and AP Psychology, where students sometimes design instruments that collect sensitive information. During the Feb. 18 committee discussion administrators said some prior projects used external institutional review boards and that the new AG formalizes local oversight and consent procedures.
Committee members asked whether parents could review surveys or question lists; administration replied that parents and guardians will be able to review research instruments and must sign permission forms before a student participates. The committee approved AG 235.1 by voice vote (4 ayes).
Administration said the guideline is intended to protect student data and ensure consistent handling of research projects going forward.
