Committee approves suite of policy revisions and procedural items; votes summarized

The policy review and subsequent committee meetings on Feb. 18 concluded with the committee approving a series of revised policies and administrative guidelines affecting district procedures, finance and student activities.

Among items adopted were a newly written administrative guideline AG 235.1 governing student-conducted research (requiring parental permission), a revision to Policy 351 adding a medical-marijuana section for employees, updates to Policy 609 (investment of district funds) and an organizational rework of policies covering student activity funds (Policy 618) and a new Policy 618.1 for trust funds. The committee also approved several finance-related policies (including Policy 620 fund-balance clarifications and Policy 621 addressing taxpayer bill-of-rights delivery) and updates to Policy 8.23 on naloxone use in schools. Where the transcript recorded votes, each was approved by voice vote with four ayes and no recorded nays.

The committee clarified that the district must send tax bills via the U.S. Postal Service (Policy 621) and that booster clubs maintain separate bank accounts (Policy 618). Administration noted that trust funds are typically used for scholarships and gifts and that those funds are kept in separate bank accounts and are approved or abolished by the board.

Also approved during committee meetings: renewals of two special-education service contracts (legal services and virtual sign-language interpretation) and approval to authorize a dedication plaque for the newly named Supernelius Fields at East High School.
