Commissioners ask staff to tighten permit language and prepare zoning panel appointments amid fiber-project inquiries

County staff reported multiple recent inquiries from a company proposing utility and fiber infrastructure installations that include directional bores, conduit and small generator sites. The company had initially submitted a building/utility permit, and staff advised that the project likely requires a conditional-use review under current county code.

Commissioners directed staff to prepare clearer permit language, defined application stages and review timelines, and to involve legal and engineering staff in preparing materials for a public hearing. Staff were instructed to set nonrefundable application fees and an acceptance/official submission date to begin the review clock; commissioners discussed using a staged review period so engineering, road, utility and legal checks are completed within a set timeline.

On a separate but related item, the commission discussed appointments to a county planning/zoning board: the code requires at least two members appointed from the county seat or city governing body and representation from each commission district. Commissioners asked staff to gather candidate names, confirm each candidate’s willingness to serve and finalize staggered terms (two per four-year term and three per two-year term) at the next meeting.
