Durham City Council approved renaming Vivian Street to "William V. Bill Bell Way" to honor former Mayor Bill Bell and his role in the citys downtown revival and support for the Durham Performing Arts Center.
Jessica Dockery, senior planning manager, presented the street-renaming application and the planning departments evaluation, which found no substantive objections from adjacent property owners and noted an estimated $365 cost for sign replacement that would be covered by the city. Staff said that renaming will require administrative address changes for adjacent properties; planning and service agencies reviewed the request and found little to no adverse public impact.
Applicant Kristin Nadair offered brief remarks in support of honoring her father; councilmembers praised Bells long record of civic service. The council approved the renaming unanimously.
The planning department will arrange the needed administrative address updates and order replacement signage pursuant to the Unified Development Ordinance procedures for street naming and renaming.
