Council proclaims Houston Tillotson University and Ebenezer Third Baptist Church 150th anniversary

Members of HTU—students, alumni and staff— and leaders from Ebenezer Third Baptist Church delivered testimony during public comment praising the institutions’ roles in education, community leadership and East Austin history. Speakers included Asia Haney (HTU alum), Shaquille Dillon (HTU marketing vice president), Jorge Sosa, student leaders and Dr. Jennifer Miles (vice president of student affairs), and Leroy Davis (co‑chair of the Ebenezer sesquicentennial celebration).
Councilmembers welcomed the delegation, several councilmembers asked to be added as cosponsors, and the mayor immediately agreed to show the full council as cosponsors on the item. Councilmembers also highlighted the African American Cultural Heritage District and the city’s interest in further planning for the district.
