County honors Broadband Committee after multi-year buildout that reached roughly 99% coverage

The Eau Claire County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 19 formally recognized the Broadband Committee for work that began in 2019 to identify unserved and underserved locations and to expand high-speed internet access across the county.
Speakers credited the committee with turning an initial county allocation of $2.8 million into roughly $16 million in leveraged infrastructure by combining county funds, state grants and internet service-provider investment. Committee members described pilots with satellite technology (Starlink) in remote study areas and a partnership with United Way to continue education and device distribution efforts.
Committee members and volunteers were presented certificates of recognition. Officials said that of approximately 37,000 broadband-serviceable locations in the county, roughly 297 remained unserved or underserved, representing about 99.2% coverage.
Board members called the broadband effort a high-impact project for economic development, remote education and telehealth access, and thanked volunteers, technical staff and partner organizations.
