Residents say postal deliveries to The Fields stopped after assault; council refers issue to staff

A resident identified as Avery told the City Council that residents at The Fields, a low-income housing complex, are experiencing mail delivery problems after an apparent assault on a postal carrier.

Avery described multiple disruptions and said it took repeated calls to the post office to locate residents' mail. "The federal government is saying that they can't deliver mail to a housing project that they help to fund," Avery said, adding that there were insurance questions and that he had difficulty finding information from the post office.

He suggested a local law enforcement officer accompany postal carriers on rounds at the complex to address safety and insurance concerns. "One of these officers could accompany a federal postal carrier on their rounds at this address," Avery said.

City staff told Avery that while the council sympathized, mail delivery is administered by the U.S. Postal Service and is not directly within city authority. Staff offered a follow-up: city staff asked Avery to leave contact information with the city attorney so staff could follow up and provide assistance where possible.

Council members did not take formal action on the matter at the meeting. The issue was recorded during public comment and city staff indicated they would follow up with the resident through the city attorney's office.
