Homewood City’s finance committee voted to provide local funding and authorize the city to enter maintenance agreements with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) for the Lakeshore Parkway/I‑65 diverging‑diamond interchange (DDI).
Staff briefed the committee on recent bid results and the agreed allocation of funds from the metropolitan planning organization (MPO), ALDOT and the city. Committee members discussed the increased bid total and the city’s options; staff said the city’s participation would help secure contractor release and move the project toward construction.
The committee approved a motion to provide the funding described by staff for agenda item 01‑08‑25 and voted to have the mayor sign the necessary concurrency documents. The committee also approved request 18‑07‑25, authorizing the city manager to execute an ALDOT traffic signal and lighting maintenance agreement for the DDI; staff noted three resolutions associated with that approval will appear on the council agenda.
Members emphasized the project’s regional traffic significance and its potential economic benefits for Lakeshore commercial corridors, including large retail sites. Staff said the city’s funding would be drawn from a capital fund consolidated to cover the project and that protections exist to return city funds if ALDOT did not proceed.
