The Mercer County Commission approved an emergency declaration after staff described disruptions to federal programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), WIC and the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), resulting from a federal government shutdown.
Staff said the declaration would enable the county to formally coordinate emergency management, work with local food pantries and community partners, and document impacts should state or federal reimbursement become available. The county noted other counties in the state are taking similar steps.
A motion to adopt the emergency declaration passed by recorded vote; commissioners also discussed support arrangements including outreach to schools, backpack programs and a readiness by the sheriff's department to assist with deliveries for seniors or residents unable to travel to pantries.
Staff will use the declaration to coordinate food distribution, share information with social-service partners, and monitor reimbursement options should state or federal assistance become available.
