The new Coakley Middle School is complete and in use, the town reported Sept. 9, and the Board of Selectmen presented a proclamation to Alan Slater, chair of the Coakley Middle School Building Committee, recognizing his leadership of the multi‑year project.
Alan Slater told the board the building is essentially complete, staff and students have occupied the spaces, and the ribbon cutting was held Aug. 25. The building committee reported the facility includes a large media center with a broadcast studio, a gymnasium described as a "gym and a half," an auditorium with more than 600 seats and a concession stand already operational. Exterior work and the new turf field and outdoor play area remain underway with completion anticipated by the end of October; final MSBA closeout documentation is expected in 2026.
Slater told the board the project came in on budget to date and that the committee expects a surplus in the neighborhood of $10 million at closeout. The board praised the committee and accepted a proclamation honoring Slater’s service to the town.
Town officials said some exterior and landscaping work will continue through 2026, and financial closeout will occur in the MSBA process during that period.
