The DeSoto City Council on Monday canvassed the returns of the June 7 special runoff election and declared Ken Waters elected to council place 3 and Deborah North elected to council place 5.
City Secretary Alicia Thomas read the official tabulation required by the Texas Election Code and the city charter, reporting that for place 3 Ken Waters received 1,314 votes (60.5%) and Everett Jackson received 858 votes (39.5%), and for place 5 Deborah North received 1,122 votes (51%) and Willie Adams Jr. received 1,046 votes (48.25%). Thomas said remaining mail ballots provided before 5 p.m. the day of the meeting did not affect the outcome.
Council Member Crystal Chisholm moved approval of the canvass resolution, and Mayor Pro Tem Leticia Hughes seconded. The council conducted a roll-call hand vote; all seven members voted "yes," and the motion passed unanimously. The council declared the results official and directed that the results be posted in city hall as required by law.
There was no financial impact associated with canvassing the returns, staff said. The canvass is the official tabulation city law requires to ensure provisional and absentee ballots are counted within the statutory window following election day.
