Board approves donation and several second‑reading items; summary of Tuesday actions
Summary
On Dec. 16 the board accepted a $10,000 donation for a dome sound upgrade and approved second readings for budget assumptions, the 2026–27 calendar, open campus policy, high‑school graduation standards and the homework policy. A proposed change to the kindergarten age/placement policy was discussed but deferred for more data.
At its Dec. 16 meeting the Buchanan Board of Education recorded several formal actions and approvals.
Donation approved The board approved a $10,000 donation from the New Canaan Public Schools Dome Fund (housed at the New Canaan Community Foundation) to upgrade the dome’s sound system from stereo to a surround setup. The donation was moved and seconded — "Matt Campbell, second, Penny" — and approved by voice vote.
Budget and calendar On second reading the board approved the budget assumptions presented at the Dec. 9 budget workshop and approved the 2026–27 district calendar. Administrators noted the proposed calendar closely matches a 2015–16 schedule when Labor Day fell on the seventh.
Policy second readings approved The board approved several policy revisions on second reading with recorded motions and voice votes: Policy 5322 (open campus, New Canaan High School), revisions to high‑school graduation standards, and Policy 6,600 (homework). Each item was moved and seconded by board members during the meeting and approved without recorded roll‑call tallies.
Deferred item A proposed revision to Policy 5,100 (age of entrance and grade placement) was discussed at length and not voted; the board asked administration to prepare anonymized data and principal feedback before returning the policy for further consideration.
Other items Administrators reported a clean external audit for fiscal 2023–24 with no findings. The board adjourned the main session to Room 231 for a PA system and classroom‑technology demonstration.
