District highlights student broadcasting program and schedules three April virtual learning days for testing

Royal Oak Schools presented program and scheduling updates at the Feb. 13 meeting: a high‑school video/broadcasting pathway that progresses from elementary weather/announcements through middle‑school projects to advanced high‑school production and co‑op opportunities, and three scheduled virtual learning days in April to support spring testing logistics.
Curriculum staff said the high‑school broadcasting program provides technical (camera, TriCaster, editing) and soft‑skill experience; students produce live broadcasts for sporting events and community coverage. Two student pieces were nominated for awards by the Michigan organization for broadcasters (student division): one athletic production and a student story on the Hamer Park dedication.
Separately, the district will use up to three of its permitted virtual learning days (under Section 21f of the State School Aid Act) to allow smaller in‑person testing cohorts and remote learning activities. The dates: April 9 (middle and high school activity noted), April 10 and April 11 (high school). Staff said these days will have dedicated teachers available for students learning at home and that students with documented testing accommodations will receive required supports; parent communications with details were sent this week and further information will be distributed as testing approaches.
Trustees noted the broadcasting program’s community value and asked for continued promotion; staff said communications and the district newsletter will highlight student work and award nominations.
