A district staff member reported that Gatesville ISD opened an employee food market after a Dec. 2 delivery of about 6,000 pounds of food and invited staff to shop free of stigma or restriction. "We had our very first delivery on, December 2 that came in that Wednesday," the staff member said.
District staff said 149 staff members used the pantry during the initial opening, which they estimated reached roughly 668 family members when household size was counted. The team also filled 80 student backpacks with food the first week; the pantry had limited canned goods left the following week.
Staff said the district ordered more product and scheduled a 7,000-pound delivery for the next Wednesday. The market hours announced in the meeting were Wednesday 4 p.m.–6 p.m. and Thursday 8 a.m.–2 p.m. Culinary students and instructor Miss Tyree helped unload, inventory and prepared recipe cards for shoppers.
The district said the food sources for the program have included donations or purchases from H‑E‑B, Sam’s, Costco and Walmart and that the food bank’s communications director, identified only as Bree, plans to feature Gatesville ISD in the food bank’s newsletter. District staff said a grand opening will be scheduled next month and trustees will receive invitations.
