Chino recognizes long‑time CIM officer, youth boxers and local businesses at Feb. 18 meeting

The Chino City Council opened its Feb. 18 meeting with a series of ceremonial recognitions honoring local public servants, youth programs and businesses.
Mayor Unisim Ulloa presented a proclamation and a city tile to Sergeant John Bennett in recognition of roughly five decades of service as a correctional officer at the California Institution for Men (CIM). The proclamation cited service spanning five decades and noted roles including housing‑unit duties, field‑crop crew work, range master instruction and participation in a Federal Bureau of Investigation–certified emergency response team. Travis Pennington, former CIM warden and now an associate director at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), and current CIM warden Eric Mejia joined colleagues in thanking Bennett. “This is a real honor,” Sergeant John Bennett told the council as he accepted the recognition and introduced family members on stage.
The council also honored the Chino Youth Boxing Foundation’s 2024 monthly award winners and named David Duran boxer of the year. Coaches and foundation leaders described the program as a long‑standing local mentoring organization that checks participants’ school progress, involves volunteers in events and emphasizes discipline and respect.
Gavrila Dental was named the February 2025 business of the month. Alex Gavrila, office manager and son of the practice’s founder, accepted a plaque and described the family’s multi‑decade practice in Chino.
Mayor Unisim Ulloa also announced the Mayor’s Home Beautification Award for Paul Hayes of Quiet Woods Street; Hayes could not attend and the city will deliver the certificate and yard sign.
