Athens Area SD coach proposes resurrecting athletics Hall of Fame

Jake Lizak, a retired soccer coach and continuing physical education teacher, proposed re-establishing an athletics Hall of Fame for the Athens Area School District, telling the board that the last induction class was in 02/2002 and that a revived program could be low-cost and community-driven.

Lizak said he researched university hall-of-fame policies and adapted language and procedures for the district. He proposed a committee with automatic seats for the superintendent, athletic director and high school principal; two representatives from SRU; two from Athens High School; two district representatives; two at-large community members; and one board member. "The last induction of a class was 02/2002," Lizak said, adding that he has an existing file of past nominees and records that could be used to catch up inductees from missed years.

The proposal emphasized a modest budget approach—plaques and limited recognition events rather than an expensive banquet—and suggested induction ceremonies could coincide with athletic events such as homecoming. Board members expressed general support. One board member asked whether those already in the previous Hall of Fame would remain; Lizak replied the committee would verify and fill gaps as needed. Superintendent Dr. Staves indicated administrative support but noted formal board action was not required unless funds were requested.

Board members encouraged Lizak to form a committee and return with any items that would require formal approval or funding. Lizak said he would provide updates as the effort moves forward.
