Far West moves to advance Meadows Park; RAMP grant application underway

Councilmember Katie told the Far West City Council on Jan. 16 that the city is preparing a RAMP grant application to fund phase one of Meadows Park, a roughly 9–10 acre site along 27100. The application focuses on infrastructure and site-access work needed before recreational amenities can be installed.

Katie said the first phase will include construction of a well to bring utilities to the site, a restroom and storage building, a parking lot and a paved walking path around the property’s perimeter to connect to existing sidewalks. "This phase is kind of a, not so fun phase because it's all of that work that's underground," she said, noting the infrastructure will be essential to later phases that include play equipment and other amenities. She said the application included letters of support from residents and students at Far West Elementary and that the grant application was due the next day by 5 p.m.

Katie said the infrastructure will also improve pedestrian safety by creating a paved trail and parking that will allow residents — particularly children walking from the neighborhood to the school — a safer route separated from traffic. She said staff will hold open houses before subsequent phases to gather more public input on amenities once the utilities and basic infrastructure are in place.

No formal council appropriation was requested at the meeting; the council heard the update and authorized staff to proceed with the grant submission and follow-up public engagement for design work.
