The Metro Council office issued an updated safety memo for council members addressing hateful and threatening communications and meeting safety, Director Darby said.
"If you feel that your physical safety or someone that you know is in danger, you call 911," Margaret said during the meeting while summarizing the memo's principal instruction. The memo also includes guidance on when and how to engage Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) for security at public events and recommends hosting meetings at Metro locations when members anticipate contentious attendance.
A council member described a recent pre-application community meeting with about 75 attendees where MNPD’s presence helped calm the crowd; staff said MNPD is the appropriate immediate contact for specific or imminent security threats. The memo also updates other facility safety measures: first-aid kits were added to council office kitchens, the sergeant at arms has AED responsibilities, and additional cameras were installed on the P1 parking level; Roseanne Hayes serves as the council-office liaison for facility safety.
Staff emphasized the memo contains more specific protocols and that members should review it; the update was presented as a routine refresh tied to staffing changes.
