Board approves routine education and personnel items; members split on vehicle and certain finance items

The Middlesex Borough School District board approved multiple routine agenda items and recorded split votes on parts of the facilities and finance package.

On motions presented by the superintendent, the board approved the committee-of-the-whole and regular meeting minutes (agenda items 5.01–5.02) and accepted the personnel recommendations covering appointments, hourly positions, extracurricular stipends, leaves, retirements and transfers (items 9.01–9.11). The education action items (11.1–11.13) were also approved. The board conducted first readings of policy updates to its public-comment guidelines (12.01–12.03); nothing was adopted at first reading.

Facilities and finance chair Mr. Nicolai summarized a package of items (14.01–14.17) that included the bills list, budget reports, awarded contracts, Chromebook repairs, equipment rentals, a proposed van purchase (14.15), payments (14.16) and a video-surveillance purchase and installation (14.17). The superintendent recommended approval of the package as presented.

During debate, board members asked for clarifications about building-use item 14.07 and the procurement for painting services tied to item 14.16. A board member asked whether the van purchase was necessary given a recently approved pickup truck; the chair explained several maintenance vehicles are at or near the end of useful life and that maintenance staff had relied on personal vehicles for work.

Roll call recorded approvals for the package overall, but multiple board members recorded no votes on particular items. Mr. Nicolai said he would "refuse from 14.07, item number 4 5, and yes to the rest." Two other members stated they had "a no for" item 14.15 (the proposed van) while another recorded "no" on an item recorded in the minutes as 14.50. The minutes show the remainder of the listed items were approved.

Why it matters: These votes authorize spending and operational changes for district facilities and transportation and affect maintenance department operations.

What’s next: Approved items will proceed as presented; items that received individual no votes remain approved for the rest of the board but are flagged in the record as opposed by specific trustees.
