Adrienne Mignery, district staff, presented a first reading of proposed updates to Policy 2195 (academic acceleration) to align district policy and procedure with state law and the Washington Association of School District Administrators (WASDA) model policy.
Mignery said the update clarifies mechanisms for ensuring students who meet qualifying measures are enrolled in advanced coursework and that dual-credit and AP credit opportunities are available in accordance with state law. She explained the district removed language in the previous procedure addressing grades K–8 that is not referenced in statute or the WASDA model and updated associated forms and procedures.
"So opening it up, this is the first read of this policy update, to see if there's any questions from the board," Mignery said.
Why it matters: Changes align district policy with statutory and model-policy expectations for enrollment in advanced coursework and clarify the district’s procedures for implementation; the item was presented as a first read and will return for a second read.
Board members had no substantive objections; the item will return for a second read at the next meeting.
