Estacada committee recommends five local residents for Traffic & Public Safety Committee

The Estacada Traffic & Public Safety Committee on Feb. 26 recommended five community members for appointment to the committee after interviewing applicants during the meeting.
The committee voted by voice to forward the names of Matthew (Matt) Blevins, Karina Olsen, Carrie Dobbs, Shirley Burke and Debbie Pullman to the City Council for formal appointment. The recommendation followed brief interviews in which candidates described their reasons for seeking appointment and relevant experience.
Blevins, introduced by the chair as the committee's new City Council liaison earlier in the meeting, said he has lived in the area for decades, has prior municipal experience serving as a councilor and mayor pro tem in Joseph, Ore., and has served on local fire and public-safety committees. "I'm retired, so that gives me a little more time for freedom," Blevins said during his interview, describing his willingness to commit time to committee work.
Karina Olsen said she moved to Estacada in 2014 and described more than a decade of legal-secretary work that included experience with condemnation and municipal ordinances; she said she hopes to bring a rural-resident perspective from her property off Hillockburn.
Carrie Dobbs said her aim is to bring residents' voices into committee work and highlighted concerns for both children and the elderly; Shirley Burke said school-zone safety near River Mill School is her primary focus. Debbie Pullman described community involvement and attention to detail from her experience as a longtime freelance graphic artist and caregiver.
Elena, the committee secretary, told members they had five openings and could recommend all applicants present; the motion to forward the names was made, seconded and approved by voice vote.
Next steps: the City Manager will place the committee's recommendation on a City Council agenda for formal appointment. The committee recorded the recommendation in its minutes and directed staff to prepare an appointment packet for council consideration.
