Former state senator promotes free Kershaw County civics education workshop

Penry Gustafson, a former state senator, used the public‑comment period at the Aug. 12 Kershaw County Council meeting to invite residents to a free, nonpartisan civics education workshop the group of volunteers is organizing.
Gustafson said the workshop aims to teach county residents about core local government functions, how to communicate with elected officials, the rules and norms for public comment at local meetings, and voter‑registration updates. She said the program is structured in two parts: Part 1 was presented by Charlie Barrineau of the Municipal Association of South Carolina and will be repeated Sept. 27; Part 2, focused on public speaking and delivering effective messages to elected officials, is scheduled for Aug. 25. Gustafson said informational booklets will be provided and registration is available via QR code.
She encouraged county officials, municipal leaders and residents to attend and said the workshops are nonpartisan and designed to increase civic engagement and civility.
