Britney Schultz, an animal control officer at the Nancy J. Brewer Animal Care Center, urged pet owners to keep animals indoors or confined during Fourth of July fireworks and offered steps to reduce escape and stress.
"Keep them indoors or secured in a room or kennel so that they don't escape your property," Schultz said. She recommended playing music to buffer noise and using calming treats to help anxious animals.
If a pet runs away, Schultz advised callers to report lost animals to Cochise County dispatch at (520) 803-3555 or to check with the shelter at (520) 458-4151. She said the Nancy J. Brewer Animal Care Center is located at 6799 East Highway 90 and will be open the following day from noon to 5 p.m.
Schultz asked owners to contact dispatch or the shelter promptly if an animal is missing and noted animal-control officers and police will try to recover escaped pets during the holiday.
