Miami County names Miami Republic its official newspaper

Miami County commissioners on July 9 voted unanimously to update a decades-old resolution and designate the Miami Republic as the county's official newspaper.
Clerk's office staff told the board that the prior resolution referenced the Western Spirit, a label that likely dated back more than 20 years. The clerk's office recommended updating the county's official publication designation to the Miami Republic because it meets the statutory parameters in KSA 64-101: the newspaper is published at least 50 times per year, is published in Kansas and maintains paid circulation within the county.
"It meets the statutory requirements to be designated as such," the clerk's explanation said during the meeting. The change was described as routine housekeeping to reflect the current paper and its name change or sale history.
Commissioner Brett moved to adopt the resolution; Commissioner Vaughn seconded the motion. The vote was unanimous (5-0).
The clerk noted that the county would not need to revisit the designation annually unless the newspaper changed its name, ownership or failed to meet statutory requirements for publication frequency and paid circulation.
