Collier County ranks on VA state home construction priority list; moves nearer to federal funding for veterans nursing home

County staff told commissioners that the Florida Department of Veterans' Affairs released its fiscal-year 2025 state home construction grant priority list and that Collier County is on that list in a position that is likely to receive a federal construction grant.
John Mullins and other staff said the county is now positioned to finalize the memorandum of agreement (MOA), provide the necessary property legal descriptions and proceed with the previously board-approved plan to transfer $10 million of voter-approved surtax funds as the state match for a veterans nursing-home facility. Staff said two earlier projects on the VA list are carryovers from the prior fiscal year; Collier County is the top-ranked new-construction applicant in fiscal year 2025 and the estimated federal funding pool available this year should be sufficient to fund through Collier's listed position.
The board praised staff for the long-running pursuit of the state and federal funding opportunity and asked staff to continue next steps to secure the grant and to bring the MOA and funding-transfer documents back for formal ratification.
