Board approves school appropriations, CARES purchases, opioid and fire program allocations

Finance staff explained a $7,500 school operating appropriation composed of state funds that requires no local match; the board approved the appropriation by roll-call vote. The board also approved a $383,147.57 appropriation for two CARES Act purchase orders for the school division; staff said no local match is required for those purchases.
On opioid settlement funds, the county received $5,266.86 and the board voted to appropriate the amount for opioid remediation services. The board then approved allocating $76,233 from FY25 Aid-to-Localities (ATL) fire program funds among the county’s volunteer fire departments outside Farmville (Darlington Heights, Hampden–Sydney, Prospect and Rice). Staff said each department will now be required to report calls and activities annually.
All appropriations and allocations were moved, seconded and carried by roll-call vote. Board members noted the importance of reporting requirements and accountability for the distributed funds.
