Sunbury City Council on Nov. 5 approved an engagement with legal counsel to advise on Purdue Pharma and other national opioid settlements and to ensure the city is properly enrolled and its claims protected.
Staff explained a prior firm that had filed a proof of claim on the city’s behalf in 2021 was absorbed into another practice and that the attorney who originally represented the city did not transition with that firm. Council approved an engagement with Retzel (and associated counsel) to centralize follow-up and counsel for any settlement enrollment or filings. The motion passed on roll call (6 yes).
Staff said the scope includes determining whether further action is required to preserve the city’s rights under national settlement agreements and to assist with any filings or documentation needed to claim funds or address obligations. Counsel will report back to administration and council on required next steps.
