The Sunbury police chief and services committee reported traffic-safety work and data at the Nov. 5 meeting, highlighting areas for enforcement and infrastructure attention.
Chief Rob Howden summarized October calls-for-service and traffic enforcement figures, saying the department recorded 564 calls for service in October 2025 compared with 416 in October 2024, and 223 traffic stops with 80 citations this year versus 114 stops and 25 citations in October 2024. He also shared speed-sign data showing vehicle volumes and average speeds at monitored locations: Cherry Street in front of PJs registered about 25,621 cars per week with an average speed of 35.8 mph; North Miller at Favreau recorded over 9,000 cars per week with an average speed of 25.8 mph. Chief Howden and council members agreed North Miller Drive merits targeted enforcement and engineering attention.
Separately, the services committee reported on a Safe Streets for All study presented by Verdantus that compiled a year of work to inform safety-focused street programs. Staff said the study positions the city to apply for funding and implement programs to improve pedestrian and roadway safety; details and follow-up will return to council in future meetings.
Council indicated it will continue to rotate enforcement and assessment locations and to pursue engineering or programmatic responses informed by the study and study-related grant opportunities.
