District 5 schedules citywide cleanup July 19 with six drop-off sites and shredding

A District 5 commissioner announced details of the El Dorado District 5 Citywide Cleanup during the July 8 Alamogordo City Commission meeting.

The one-day cleanup is scheduled for July 19 from 7:00 a.m. to noon. Organizers said the program will operate six staffed drop-off/dumpster sites around the city; residents may bring most household items for free, but organizers asked that participants not bring appliances, electronics, batteries, motor oil, antifreeze, rechargeable tool batteries, vehicle batteries, large scrap metal, ink cartridges, or cell phones. Shredding will be available from 10 a.m. until noon at 523 Maryland Avenue.

The speaker said volunteers and community groups including Community Power New Mexico, Many Hands, JustServe and local radio station KALH assisted with parade placement and outreach; the cleanup organizers had distributed roughly 500 flyers during a recent parade and planned newspaper publicity. First 50 registrants will receive a T‑shirt bearing the event logo and sponsor list. The speaker said volunteers currently outnumber properties requesting service, and that sign-ups are targeted to elderly and those in need of services, but the drop-off sites are open to all income levels.

Drop-off locations listed at the meeting included the Dudley Community Center and Park (Maryland/Second–Eighth Street sidewalk area), Indian Wells, Scenic (2201 Puerto Rico / Alamogordo Senior Center), New Beginnings Church of the Nazarene parking lot, Panorama Boulevard (next to Fairfield Inn), and Walker Boulevard (near the baseball park). The speaker emphasized that household hazardous items and certain electronics would not be accepted.
