Mableton notifies Cobb County it will assume solid‑waste, planning and code-enforcement services

The Mableton City Council voted on Jan. 22 to notify Cobb County that the city intends to assume several services currently provided by the county. The approved resolution sets the effective date for solid‑waste management as Feb. 26, 2025 and the effective date for planning and zoning and for enforcement of building, housing, plumbing and electrical codes as March 3, 2025.

City Attorney explained that the council had incorporated prior council feedback and explicitly excluded parks and stormwater from the transition notice. The resolution triggers required administrative steps with the county and begins the intergovernmental‑agreement process for transferring responsibilities and records.

Councilmember discussion emphasized pacing and readiness; councilmembers asked for implementation timelines and noted dependencies such as facility readiness, staffing, and the need for public notice. City staff confirmed that some capital purchases (notably three trucks) and office buildouts are pending final accounting and will be reflected in future reports.
