Kennebec County authorizes external counsel to vote on Purdue/Sackler master ballot

Kennebec County commissioners voted to authorize outside counsel to cast a master ballot on the county's behalf in connection with the Purdue/Sackler bankruptcy settlement process.
County administration said the firm that represents county and municipal interests had reviewed the action and advised the county that there appeared to be little or no risk associated with participation. "I asked them about this one in particular, and they felt that there was little or no risk concerning it," the county administrator said while bringing an authorization form to the commission.
Commissioners moved and seconded a motion authorizing the county to participate through the opt-in form provided by the firm. The motion passed by voice vote.
Why it matters: Participation via a master ballot enables counties to be part of a coordinated claims-and-vote process in a nationwide bankruptcy settlement and is a common mechanism for local governments to access settlement funds without filing separate, costly litigation.
