Manassas Park city council member urges threefold increase to school board stipends

Michael Carrera, who identified himself as a Manassas Park city council member and resident, addressed the board during public comment and urged the board to increase its member stipends. Carrera said the city council recently approved a raise for its members after more than 20 years without an increase and argued the school board’s stipends are similarly low.
Carrera recommended increasing stipends by roughly 300 percent, proposing amounts "at least" around $10,000 for board members and $11,000–$12,000 for the chair, and said he would support such a change on the city council. "If we're not gonna fund the leadership or the members that support the leadership, then there's no point of being a city," Carrera told the board.
The board did not take action on the suggestion during the meeting. Public comment rules presented earlier in the meeting state speakers have three minutes and the board does not respond during public comment; staff will follow up if a speaker’s comments warrant a response.
