Council adopts resolution condemning political violence and honoring Charlie Kirk after divided public comment

The Saint Charles County Council on Monday adopted Resolution 25-10, which “strongly condemns all acts of political violence” and explicitly honors the life and civic activities of Charlie Kirk. The resolution was sponsored by Councilmen Matt Swanson, Joe Bridal, Mike Elam, Dave Hammond and Tim Baker and passed on a roll call vote.

The resolution text calls on residents to reflect on Kirk’s contributions to civic engagement and directs the council secretary to send a certified copy to Kirk’s family via Turning Point USA. Several council members who sponsored the resolution described it as a condemnation of political violence and a recognition of someone they said encouraged civic debate.

The measure produced an extended public-comment period with sharply divided views. Supporters told the council that Kirk advanced civil debate and inspired young people; several speakers asked for a unanimous vote. Opponents read and cited statements from Kirk’s public record they described as racist, anti‑LGBTQ and demeaning toward particular groups and said a memorial resolution was inappropriate. Others said the council should not single out one private individual for praise while omitting other victims of political violence.

After the public-comment period and council discussion, the council adopted the resolution. The record shows the council voted to pass Resolution 25-10 and to send a certified copy to Turning Point USA as directed in Section 2 of the resolution.
