Resident urges leniency and consistent enforcement in nuisance cleanup at city meeting

During the public-comment portion of the Nov. 3 City Commission meeting, resident Michael Engel of Camden spoke about nuisance-enforcement actions at 120 South Blair Street and 110 South Blair Street. Engel said his family has been working to clean the properties — removing tires and debris, tagging vehicles and installing a fence after earlier city requests — and asked the commission for ‘‘a little bit of leeway’’ while they complete the work.
Engel said he understood the city had issued notices but described frustration at perceived inconsistent enforcement, noting an area dealership with many untagged vehicles and other properties he described as having similar conditions that had not been cleared. He said city staff recently removed material from his property and that the removal felt unsettling because some items have repair value to his family’s business. Engel asked the commission to consider that he and his relatives were trying to make the property compliant.
The commission did not take action during public comment; staff and commissioners later proceeded to scheduled agenda items.
