Several Planning Board members on Jan. 8 voiced concern about the visual and shoreline impacts of offshore wind turbines and associated undersea cable work. Members said the presence of new turbines and the prospect of a cable route up the Sakonnet (or similar) river could affect views, recreation and local shoreline environments.
One member said the blinking turbine lights were noticeable from residential viewpoints and could affect property values. Another member described potential environmental effects from cable installation in tidal rivers and urged the town to consider a formal response. The planner advised that the board could place the subject on a future agenda, allow public comment and, if appropriate, recommend a position or letter to the Town Council.
The board agreed to add the topic to a future agenda so members and members of the public can discuss next steps, which could include drafting a letter of concern to the Town Council or coordinating with adjoining communities and state officials.
