The Corinth City Council unanimously approved an amendment to the Unified Development Code clarifying that barbed wire and similar hazardous fencing are prohibited in commercial and industrial areas.
Matthew Lilly, planning department, told the council the UDC previously prohibited barbed wire in residential areas smaller than one acre but appeared to allow it in commercial and industrial areas when fencing exceeded eight feet, creating a conflict. "SAFR is recommending approval as presented," Lilly said, and he told the council the Planning & Zoning Commission voted 4–0 to recommend approval.
No members of the public spoke during the hearing. After the mayor closed the public hearing a councilmember moved to adopt the ordinance amending UDC subsection 4.02 0.08 k; another councilmember seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Council and staff said the amendment is intended to promote safety, improve aesthetics, and create uniformity across the city’s code. The ordinance text submitted for the council explicitly prohibits "barbed wire or similar types of wire or hazardous fencing" within commercial and industrial zoning as an amendment to the UDC.
