The Prescott City Council voted 5–2 on Nov. 4 to reverse the Prescott Preservation Commission’s October denial of a proposed 47-room hotel at 136–140 South Montezuma Street and to approve the project’s design review.
Planning Manager Alex Bramlett summarized the project and staff-commissioned review by Broadbent & Associates, which concluded the proposed building’s massing, materials and setbacks are compatible with the Courthouse Plaza historic district and that upper-story setbacks and material choices make the Fourth Floor minimally visible from the public right-of-way. The city also solicited a voluntary review from the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO); SHPO noted improvements from earlier submittals but recommended reconsideration of patio-roof materials and suggested upper-story setbacks or a retractable roof covering to reduce visual impact.
