Summary
The board approved a revised revetment and sand-fill plan for 573 Waterfront Lane after the applicant and agent submitted updated drawings that moved the revetment out of wetland jurisdiction. Public comment included a request for living-shoreline solutions.
The Mathews County Wetlands Board approved a revised shoreline stabilization plan for Martha (Dougette) Ashman at 573 Waterfront Lane after hearing public comment and receiving updated drawings that the applicant said remove proposed wetland impacts.
Agent Sherry McDearman told the board the project was changed from an originally proposed revetment that encroached into a tidal channel to a plan that moves the revetment landward to avoid wetlands. McDearman said the revised drawings submitted to staff show “0 impact to wetlands” and that, if approved, the applicant will submit the formal revised JPA and drawings the next day.
During public comment, resident Mackie (spelled in the record as both Mackie and Mackey) Hall, who paddles the creek regularly, asked why a living shoreline was not being used, citing nearby successful living-shoreline examples and describing the local bottom conditions and water depths. Applicant Martha Ashman said erosion at the property tip has been significant since construction of the house and dock and that the proposed work is intended to protect the shoreline and existing structures.
Board staff confirmed the board received the new drawings that pull the structure out of wetlands jurisdiction. After discussion, board members recorded affirmative votes and approved the project conditioned on attachment of the final revised drawings to the permit record.
The record identifies project elements including a revetment, shell bags, sand fill and Spartina patens plantings along a portion of Snutz Creek shoreline; specific linear feet and cubic-yard figures were read by staff in the application description.
