Board amends bylaws to add list of "crops unique to the area," including sunflowers and specialty grains

The Carbon County Farmland Preservation Board approved amendments to the program bylaws to add a list of “crops unique to the area,” a change intended to allow specialty farms of smaller acreage to qualify for the program.
Anna (staff member) presented the amendment proposed to Article 6.4 and the addition of a new Article 6.5. She said the state board required the list as part of the deal form review and that without the change some files would be held up. “We just wanna add a list of crops unique to the area to the program bylaws so that we can preserve a farm that's only 10 acres in size if it does use the crops unique to the area,” Anna said.
Board members discussed specific crops to include. Members suggested sunflowers and “specialty grains or vegetables for the pet food or specialty food processing market,” along with special wheats and corns used for milling. The proposed amendment also included a catchall line allowing other crops to qualify.
A motion to change the bylaws as proposed (amending Article 6.4, 6.4(e)(d) and adding section 6, article 6.5) was made, seconded and approved by voice vote.
Staff will incorporate the agreed crop language into the bylaws and submit the updated paperwork to the state board to move several farm files through review.
