Council schedules wildfire mitigation study session and asks for interagency briefing before summer

Lakewood City Council on Jan. 27 voted unanimously to schedule a study session to brief the full council on wildfire-risk mitigation, evacuation preparedness and interagency coordination. The motion directed staff to set a briefing for council before July and encouraged staff to engage West Metro Fire and county partners, including Commissioner Dahlkemper and the county'led Wildland-Urban Interface work group, for participation and subject-matter input.
Why it matters: Councilors cited the recent Southern California fires and past Colorado fire incidents (including the Marshall/Superior-area fires) in arguing the city should review plans, coordination and public messaging. Councilors asked for clear information the city can provide to residents about responsibilities, evacuation planning and mitigation options.
Next steps: Staff will work with West Metro Fire, the county and relevant partners to set a briefing time before July; councilors expressed a preference for a dedicated session but recognized other county forums and the city's calendars could be options. The council vote was unanimous.
