County adds comprehensive and collision coverage to vehicle insurance policy

Worcester County commissioners voted unanimously Feb. 18 to add comprehensive and collision coverage to the county's auto policy for the remainder of fiscal year 2025 and to include the coverage in the FY26 budget request.
Human Resources Director Stacy Norton and Risk Manager Dustin Walker told the board that the county has experienced numerous vehicle claims in the current fiscal year; Norton cited 21 auto accidents year to date, three of which fall under existing insurer coverage and others that the county funded directly. They presented a cost‑benefit analysis and recommended coverage with a $2,500 deductible.
Norton provided examples of claims the county has faced, including a totaled snow plow truck and a sheriff's pursuit vehicle that required replacement and upfitting. The board approved the recommended coverage and deductible and directed staff to include the additional premium in the FY26 budget process.
No change to fleet operations was adopted at the meeting beyond the insurance addition; specific premium and budget amounts were included in staff memoranda and will be handled through the budget cycle.
