Carolyn, a candidate for the Satellite Beach Library Board, told the City Council during a Nov. 5 workshop that she spent 34 years in education and now wants to "give back to the community" by advising library services.
"I love libraries. That's the position. And I'm a retired educator and mindfulness facilitator currently," Carolyn said, adding that her professional theme has been "head, heart, and hands." She described the library as providing health and literacy services (the heart), learning and education (the head) and physical meeting space for clubs and activities (the hands).
Council member Steve and other councilors welcomed Carolyn and asked brief follow-up questions. One councilor asked about Carolyn's study-abroad experience in Veracruz; Carolyn said she lived with a family for two months while studying Spanish, which she said enriched her understanding of other cultures. Councilors also confirmed she has lived in Satellite Beach about two and a half years.
The council chair explained the workshop format at the start: applicants give a short statement, councilors may ask questions, and formal appointment decisions will be taken at the end of the regular meeting later that night. No appointment vote or formal action occurred during the workshop.
Carolyn said she would bring her experience in early childhood, district-level and adult learning, and social-emotional learning to the board. Councilors described her statement and background as a strong fit for a board that "advises and assists the library staff on program services and issues." The chair said applicants would be notified after the council makes its determinations later in the meeting.
