City recreation supervisors Olympia Hugo and Esteban Melcher told the Inter Neighborhood Council Organization that the Cultural and Community Services Department has multiple holiday programs and community events planned and encouraged neighborhood participation.
Staff said turkey distribution sign-ups have begun at three youth centers (Powell Youth Center, Colonia Youth Center and Southwinds Youth Center) and that the city distributes 500 turkeys annually. Families who sign up must bring identification and proof of government assistance. Hugo said spots remain available at some locations and provided registration details.
The department also reported that winter youth basketball sign-ups are open for students in grades two through eight, with registration available at the Colonia and Powell gyms and other school-based sign-up opportunities. Staff highlighted a workforce family day scheduled for Jan. 10 that will offer résumé help and job-application assistance for adults while children's librarians lead activities for youth.
Hugo described a new youth civic program, "Voices of Oxnard Youth," launching in January; the program will recruit one delegate from each local high school (including home and alternative schools) for a cohort that runs through May. Applications are due Nov. 14, according to staff materials.
Santa's Workshop gift registrations are set to open the week of Nov. 17 at the same three youth centers. Recreation staff also distributed senior-center calendars, described a new seniors-in-motion program (SIMS) intended to keep older adults active, and previewed the Tamar (Tamale) Festival on Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., which staff said will include roughly 25 food vendors (about 15 offering tamales), craft activities, a best-tamale contest and family programming.
Staff provided flyers and QR codes for registration and asked neighborhood chairs to share details with residents. Questions raised during the presentation included parking access for festival attendees; staff said they would follow up with public works and facilities for details.
